Club Information
The Statesville Model Flyers (SMF) is a group of modelers
who love building and flying RC aircraft. We as a group enjoy all aspects of
model aviation, from the smallest park flyer up to the fastest and biggest
scale subjects. The SMF welcome all and offer a family friendly environment for
the RC enthusiast.
The club has about 60 members and many can usually be found at the flying field
on weekends. While most of our members typically fly for fun or sport, some do
practice aerobatic IMAC or Pattern style routines. We also have some members
that fly warbirds of various eras and sizes. A few
guys fly helicopters and control-line models as well.

Getting Started in the RC Hobby
If you have just become interested or are new to model aviation, we can help get you flying and working toward your goal of flying solo. As a new student we will introduce you to a qualified flight instructor. Working with an instructor is the easiest and best way to learn as it will help shorten your learning curve and maximize the fun. Please feel free to get in touch with one of our club officers to learn more and come fly with us.
You may also be interested in checking out the AMA online magazine Sport Aviator as it is designed to help new RC pilots get started and succeed. Their Sure-Start Guide is a great introduction to what one may expect when heading to the field for the first time.
Check Flights
A new member that has already been flying RC model aircraft prior to joining the SMF must meet with a club instructor for briefing on the club rules and to do a check flight. If it is determined that they are already a safe and proficient RC pilot the flight instructor may then grant full flying privileges.
